Also called thermoplastic rubbers, TPEs can be processed easily and stretched to moderate elongations. Commercial Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPEs) are mainly subdivided into the following six generic classes:
  • Styrenic block copolymers (TPE-s)
  • Polyolefin blends (TPE-o)
  • Elastomeric alloys (TPE-v or TPV)
  • Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)
  • Thermoplastic copolyester
  • Thermoplastic polyamides

The polyolefin thermoplastic elastomer blends has best of both, thermoplastic nature and rubbery properties. This blend efficiently meets the requirements for chemical stability, resistance to weather, low density and ability to accept compounding ingredients without affecting its physical properties. The TPE-V is a blend of compounds of PP and EPDM rubber, used for manufacturing seals, like pipe seals, automotive seals, etc., where high resistance to heat is required. Whereas, TPE-S is used in adhesives, footwear, seals, grips, etc.


Like plastics, Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) materials can be easily molded, extruded and reused. However, they also have some elastic properties that are similar to rubbers and are not recyclable due to their thermosetting characteristics. Another major advantage of Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) is that they require minimal to no compounding, i.e., there is no requirement for adding reinforcing agents, stabilizers or even cure systems. This gives excellent consistency to both the basic materials as well as the finished products. Also, most of the dyes can be safely used for coloring TPEs and they are energy efficient and highly affordable as compared to most of their counterpart like Thermoset Rubbers. Extrusion and injection molding are two main processes used in manufacturing TPEs. Fabrication done through the process of injection molding is swift and the cost input is also very low. TPEs can be manufactured employing similar equipment and methods that are normally used in the extrusion or injection molding process of normal thermoplastics. Molding, thermoforming, and heat welding are also some of the processes that can be utilized for manufacturing TPEs. Compression molding is also used, though rarely.


TPEs are highly demanded plastics material because of its uniqueness. This material has the elasticity, look and feel of thermoset rubber and efficiency of plastic. This is an ideal material that can be reclaimed or recycle. It's melt-processability property allows it to easily injection molded and extruded. Using this material, the engineers can achieve high elongation in the end product. Not only this, the scrap material of TPE or its rejected end products can be reprocessed.
